The Momeroteta de Mataró is a children’s fire figure linked to the Momerota de Mataró. It was built by Boris Ruiz three years after the Momerota was first presented and made its public debut during Les Santes in Mataró in 1982.

The Momeroteta is carried by two people and has a bull’s head and the body of a mulassa. Its appearance resembles the Momerota, but it is smaller and can be easily recognised by its tongue sticking out of its mouth and its single fire point on each horn.

History of the Momeroteta de Mataró

The Momeroteta was created in 1982, three years after the Momerota de Mataró was first presented. Like its mother, it was built by actor Boris Ruiz.

The figure became part of the city’s popular culture as a smaller version of the Momerota, with a group made up of children and a special presence in the children’s events of Les Santes.

The Colla de la Momeroteta

The Colla de la Momeroteta de Mataró is made up of around twenty children from the city.

Members of the group wear a loose work coat, sash, black trousers, traditional esparto espardenyes and a black beret, following a style of dress very similar to that of the Colla de la Momerota.

The Momeroteta is carried by two people, while the other members of the group take part in its performances and accompaniment.

The dance of the Momeroteta

The Momeroteta has its own dance, composed by the Grallers de Cabrils, with choreography by Montserrat Calsapeu.

The dance has two parts. In the first, the Momeroteta performs a kind of waltz with zigzags, diagonal movements, jumps and quarter turns.

In the second part, the figure moves in circular patterns with more pronounced jumps, ending with a succession of fast turns.

The Momeroteta during Les Santes in Mataró

The Momeroteta takes part in different events during Les Santes in Mataró and has a special presence in festivities involving younger participants.

During the Festa Major, it takes part in the Crida, Correguspira, Anada a Ofici, Passada, Anada a la Residència Sant Josep and Anem a Tancar, among other events.

Outside Les Santes, it also takes part in the Carnestoltes de Mataró.
