The Mataró Flag and Les Santes

When Les Santes arrives, many balconies in Mataró are decorated for the Festa Major. Hanging the Mataró Flag from your balcony is a way of making the celebration visible on the façades and streets of the city.

In 2023, Robafaves began promoting this custom again with the aim of bringing the flag back to balconies during the Festa Major. Since then, it has become increasingly common to see it around Mataró as July approaches.

The history of the Mataró Flag

The origins of the Mataró Flag date back to 1845. The Royal Order of 30 July that year established individual flags to identify ships from Spain’s maritime provinces.

Mataró had been the capital of its maritime province since 1751 and was assigned a flag consisting of a red cross on a navy blue background.

The Maritime Province of Mataró disappeared in 1867, but the flag remained present in the city. It can be found in different historical records, Les Santes programmes and places such as Mataró City Hall and the Museu de Mataró.

In 1985, Mataró City Council unanimously adopted it as the city’s official municipal flag.

What colours are on the Mataró Flag?

The Mataró Flag has a navy blue background with a centred red cross. The width of the cross is one fifth of the total width of the flag.

The colours proposed by the Associació Catalana de Vexil·lologia are Pantone 186 C for red and Pantone 280 for blue.

A flag with more than a century of history in Mataró

The connection between the flag and the Festa Major is not new. The Mataró Flag already appeared in the 1911 Les Santes programme as part of the procession banner.

Today, it can once again be seen on balconies as Les Santes approaches, particularly around 25 to 29 July.
