The Drac de Mataró is one of the fire figures in the city’s popular culture. It was first presented on 20 April 1991, during the Sant Jordi festivities, thanks to the initiative of around twenty people and Mataró City Council.

The figure is carried by one person and is inspired by the winged dragon on the top of Robafaves’ helmet. It has eight fixed fire points and a mechanism that allows it to breathe fire from its mouth.

History of the Drac de Mataró

The construction of the Drac de Mataró was commissioned to sculptor Manel Casserres from Solsona. Since its presentation in 1991, the figure has taken part in the fire events of Les Santes and the Sant Jordi celebrations in Mataró.

The Colla del Drac de Mataró is made up of bearers and musicians. Their costume includes a hooded jacket, black trousers and a green sash.

The emblem on the chest was created by Néfer Rovira, while the design on the back was created by Núria Julià.

The Fogonada de Sant Jordi

In 1997, the Fogonada de Sant Jordi was created as an adaptation of the legend of Sant Jordi set in the city of Mataró.

During this event, the Drac becomes one of the central figures in a fire procession characterised by the voltafocs, which fill the squares along the route with light, smoke and pyrotechnics.

The dance of the Drac de Mataró

The Drac has its own dance, created by Michael Weiss, with choreography by Montserrat Calsapeu.

The figure moves to the rhythm of the tabals. The dance combines different rhythms and steps and ends with a succession of turns, stopping as the final pyrotechnics are lit.

The Drac during Les Santes in Mataró

The Drac takes part in different events during Les Santes in Mataró and is one of the fire figures seen during the Festa Major.

During Les Santes, it takes part in the Crida, Escapada, Anada a Ofici, Passada, Ball de Dracs, Anada a la Residència Sant Josep, No n’hi ha prou and Anem a Tancar, among other events.

Outside Les Santes, one of its most characteristic appearances is the Fogonada de Sant Jordi.
