The history of the Mataró Flag

The Mataró Flag has a history stretching back to 1845. Its origin lies in the Royal Order of 30 July of that year, which required vessels from Spain's 37 maritime provinces to carry their own flag for identification. Mataró, capital of its maritime province since 1751, was assigned a red cross on a navy blue background.

Mataró had been a major maritime power, and this symbol took deep root in the city's collective memory. Even after the maritime province was abolished in 1867, the flag remained present for 118 years in public events, Les Santes programmes, on the modernist ceiling of the city council chamber — designed by Puig i Cadafalch in 1893 — and on the ceiling of the Mataró Museum. In 1985, the Mataró City Council unanimously adopted it as the official municipal flag.

What colours does the Mataró Flag have?

The Mataró Flag is navy blue with a centred red cross. The width of the cross is one fifth of the total width of the flag. The official colours proposed by the Catalan Vexillology Association are Pantone 186 C for red and Pantone 280 for blue.

The tradition of hanging the flag for Les Santes

During Les Santes, the streets of Mataró fill with music, fire and tradition. Hanging the Mataró Flag on your balcony is a way of taking part in the festival from home, showing pride in the culture and identity of the city, and keeping alive a tradition that many people from Mataró remember from their grandparents. The flag already appeared in the 1911 Les Santes programme, as part of the procession banner.
