The Momeroteta of Mataró
The Momeroteta of Mataró is a young fire figure linked to the Momerota of Mataró. It was created by Boris Ruiz three years after its mother was first presented and made its public debut during Les Santes de Mataró in 1982.
The Momeroteta is carried by two people and has a bull’s head and a mule-shaped body. Its appearance resembles the Momerota, but it is smaller and is particularly recognisable because it sticks its tongue out and has one fire point on each horn.
History of the Momeroteta of Mataró
The Momeroteta was created in 1982, three years after the presentation of the Momerota of Mataró. Like its mother, it was created by actor Boris Ruiz.
The figure became part of the city’s popular culture as a smaller counterpart to the Momerota, with a group made up of children and a particularly close connection to the younger events of Les Santes.
The Colla de la Momeroteta
The Colla de la Momeroteta de Mataró consists of around twenty children from the city.
Members of the group wear a loose smock, sash, black trousers, traditional esparto espadrilles and a black beret, following a style similar to that of the Colla de la Momerota.
The Momeroteta itself is carried by two people, while the other members of the group take part in accompanying the figure and its performances.
The dance of the Momeroteta
The Momeroteta has its own dance, composed by the Grallers de Cabrils, with choreography by Montserrat Calsapeu.
The dance consists of two sections. In the first, the Momeroteta performs a waltz-like sequence with zigzags, diagonals, jumps and quarter turns.
In the second section, the figure moves in circular patterns with more pronounced jumps before finishing with a sequence of rapid turns.
The Momeroteta during Les Santes de Mataró
The Momeroteta takes part in several events during Les Santes de Mataró and plays a particularly prominent role in festive activities involving younger participants.
During the Festa Major, it participates in events including the Crida, Correguspira, Anada a Ofici, Passada, Anada a la Residència Sant Josep and Anem a Tancar.
Outside Les Santes, it also takes part in the Carnival of Mataró.

The Momeroteta is considered the daughter of the Momerota of Mataró and shares many of its visual characteristics: a bull’s head, a mule-shaped body and pyrotechnic points on its horns.
