The Drac of Mataró is one of the fire figures of the city’s popular culture. It was unveiled on 20 April 1991 during the Sant Jordi celebrations, thanks to the initiative of around twenty people and Mataró City Council.

The figure is carried by a single bearer and is inspired by the winged dragon on the top of Robafaves’ helmet. The Drac combines a fierce appearance with a festive character and features eight fixed fire points, as well as a mechanism that allows it to project fire from its mouth.

History of the Drac of Mataró

The construction of the Drac of Mataró was commissioned from sculptor Manel Casserres of Solsona. Since its presentation in 1991, the figure has become one of the central characters in the fire-related events of Les Santes and the Sant Jordi celebrations in Mataró.

The Colla del Drac de Mataró is made up of bearers and musicians. Their costume includes a hooded tunic, black trousers and a green sash.

The emblem on the chest was designed by Néfer Rovira, while the symbol on the back was created by Núria Julià.

The Sant Jordi Fogonada

In 1997, the Fogonada de Sant Jordi was created as an adaptation of the legend of Saint George set in the city of Mataró.

During the event, the Drac becomes one of the central figures of a fire procession characterised by voltafocs, filling the squares along the route with light, smoke and pyrotechnics.

The dance of the Drac of Mataró

The Drac has its own dance, devised by Michael Weiss, with choreography by Montserrat Calsapeu.

The figure moves to the rhythm of drums. The dance combines different rhythms and steps and culminates in a sequence of rapid turns that stop at the precise moment of the final pyrotechnic ignition.

The Drac during Les Santes de Mataró

The Drac takes part in several of the main events of Les Santes de Mataró and is one of the festive figures that accompanies the city during its Festa Major.

During Les Santes it takes part in events including the Crida, Escapada, Anada a Ofici, Passada, Ball de Dracs, Anada a la Residència Sant Josep, No n’hi ha prou and Anem a Tancar.

Outside Les Santes, one of its most significant appearances is the Fogonada de Sant Jordi.
