The Diablesses de Mataró — Catalonia's First All-Female Fire Colla

The Diablesses de Mataró — Catalonia's First All-Female Fire Colla

In 1985, the first all-female diablesses colla in Catalonia was created, with the aim of bringing a bold and daring contribution of fire and festivity to the Les Santes de Mataró programme.

The colla is made up of thirty-eight members accompanied by around twenty musicians playing tabors, snare drums, bass drum, cymbals, cowbell and whistle. Each diablessa carries a carretilla (a pyrotechnic device) at the top of her mace. Once lit, it produces an umbrella of fire sparks that run over the heads of the surrounding crowd, ending with a small bang.

History of the Diablesses de Mataró

The costume was designed by local artist Néfer Rovira: a cape with red and black fabrics, covered in symbols evoking flames and the night, some painted and others sewn to create a relief on the fabric.

Since 1994, for safety reasons, each diablessa carries a bag that can hold around twenty carretilles, giving them more autonomy and avoiding the concentration of gunpowder in a single carrier.

When it is time to perform in front of Mataró Town Hall, at la Crida or la Dormida, six diablesses circle a giant pitchfork with carretilles and titaniums to the sound of the drum roll.

The Diablesses across Catalonia and beyond

For over 26 years, the Diablesses de Mataró have been spreading the name of Mataró to many places across Catalonia through their participation in correfocs. They are one of the most recognised and respected fire groups in the country.
