Who are the Diablesses of Mataró?

The Diablesses of Mataró are a fire group founded in 1985 and made up entirely of women. Since then, they have formed part of the city’s popular culture and take part in several events during Les Santes de Mataró, the city’s Festa Major.

The group has 38 members, accompanied by around twenty musicians. Each Diablessa carries a mace with a carretilla at the top and, since 1994, also carries a bag that can hold approximately twenty carretilles.

The Diablesses’ costume was conceived by local artist Nefer Rovira and is one of the group’s distinctive visual features.

During Les Santes, the Diablesses take part in events such as the Crida, Escapada a Negra Nit, Anada a Ofici, Passada, No n’hi ha prou and Anem a tancar.
